Resistance contingency planning matrix template

  • This template is a guide for development of a ‘risk mitigation’ plan for a change project
  • Given that some form of sponsor/group resistance is likely during a change initiative, this tool enables change leaders and managers to identify likely forms of resistance, possible preventative actions, ways of assessing the damaging impact of the resistance if it does occur, and potential corrective steps to take
  • This tool also prompts managers and leaders to clarify which individual or group is responsible for managing each of the likely sources of resistance that are identified

When to use?

  • This tool is used primarily during the planning stage of change, ideally after the desired state has been identified (during gap analysis)
  • You may wish to refer to the video from the module ‘Managing Resistance’ to review the four main reasons that individuals resist change initiatives:
    1. They don’t understand the change
    2. They don’t like the impact of the change on them personally
    3. They don’t like the change
    4. They don’t like you (or those people they perceive as responsible for the change)

What Next

  • This tool is used as a planning guide and may be referred to during the implementation phase of the change initiative
  • It is a dynamic document as the change itself changes and should be updated periodically
